Kudat, Lahad Datu, Semporna To Become Entry Points
KOTA KINABALU, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- Kudat, Lahad Datu and Semporna would soon become entry points to Sabah said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman here today.The three entry points would be in addition to the existing entry points in Sandakan and Tawau.
"The opening of additional entry points is to ensure foreign workers use the right channel and procedures to enter the country and the Immigration Department will fully implement the biometric monitoring system to identify those who enter the country," he told reporters after chairing a state safety committee meeting here today.He added that safety features along the shores would also be increased with the installation of four additional radars along the shores of Sabah to increase surveillance as a means of preventing illegal entries that can be detrimental to the safety of the Sabah people.
"Throughout 2008, 24,269 were detained for entering the state illegally and from the total, 19,151 had been deported to their respective countries namely 13,615 (Philippines), 5,278 Indonesians and 258 from a number of other countries," he said.
He added that till October last year, the state registered 312,837 foreign workers employed by 21,156 companies in sectors like construction, agriculture and farming."From the law perspective, 64 per cent of those detained and deported were produced in court and handed penalties for their offences," he said.He also urged employers to register their foreign employees and pay their levy accordingly before May to avoid any action.-- BERNAMA
