Interesting Places and Facts of Kudat

Premier tourist attraction for Malaysia the Tip of Borneo (Tanjung Simpang Megayau) spectacular headland of Borneo. Meeting point of Sulu and South China Sea was launched by the YAB Datuk Musa Haji Aman, Chief Minister of Sabah on 10th July 2004. Located at the northern end of Borneo; Geographical coordinates: U779650 E7817070 (RSO). The landmark with important heritage for Sabah symbolizing the many significant aspects of Kudat’s past and present.

Literally, Tanjung means ‘tip’ and ‘Sampang Mangazo’ means a junction where a battle took place. According to Rungus folklore, this was the site of a fierce battle fought by their forefathers, defending Rungus territory against invading enemies.

The north coast and the Kudat Peninsula was a favourite haunt of pirates who frequently attacked and looted villages in the area. As a result the villages decided to combine forces to defend themselves. The strategic location of Tanjung Simpang Mengayau became an ideal spot to observe the arrivals of pirates and foreign ships. The brace warriors stood guard here and kept unwanted visitors at bay.

The fleet of the famous explorer, Ferdinand Magellan, on its voyage to circumnavigate the globe, was said to have stopped here for forty-two days to repair their ships.


• Honey Bee Farm - Witness bee keeping and the process of harvesting beeswax, honey and royal jelly which is known for its highly valued nutritional benefits
• Gongs, the most prevalent of Sabah idiophones, are valued not only as musical instruments but also as items of wealth. It takes days of pounding to produce a gong. Demonstrations of making gongs in various stages by skilled craftsmen is an experience not to be missed, only at Kampong Sumangkap
• Most traditional friendly and fascinating tribal group ~ Rungus. Legendary for handicraft skills, particularly woven fabrics, beadwork and fine basketware. Prosaic items such as brooms made from coconut husks at Kampong Bavanggazo. At the same time, visiting traditional Longhouse built solely from locally available materials such as timber ,tratch, bamboo, large slabs and bark – experience the Rungus way of life and join in cultural dance, not forgetting to sample their wild food
• Kudat is also famed for its fresh and inexpensive seafood supplying for local and international needs
• Tamu ground (Weekly Market) is worth visiting, especially for the arrays of handicrafts, lively atmosphere and some unusual fresh product on sale.
• Savour the locally grown peanuts and roasted corn is a popular enroute to Kudat

• Sidek Esplanade; popular place to relax by the bay with plenty of room for strolling and stunning views of the marine fish ponds
• Daily Boat departs to Pulau Banggi. Located at the island’s southern tip. Smallest Sabah’s indigenous groups with almost 50 Fishing Villages coupled with rich marine ecstasy and enchanting corals reefs. The island are rich archeological site and caves with sunken wrecks from the 18th centuries
