Gong Factory | Kampung Sumangkap
In keeping with Kudat's ‘One Village, One Product' concept, Kampung Sumangkap situated less than a kilometre from Kg. Gombizau (the Honey Bee Village) is where gongs are produced. The Village is 92 kilometres or about two hours drive from Kota Kinabalu City.
Gongs feature importantly in all ethnic celebrations, be it merry or somber, and here in Kudat they are made by about ten artisans who will readily show you the art of making the gongs from scratch. The finished gongs are set in frames horizontally or hung vertically and vary in sizes from small souvenir items to huge ones up to two metres across, mainly for decorative purposes. It is possible to do on-the-spot buying, or for bigger purchases, order ahead.
